I connected a new PC to my home lan. I can ping the new PC from the three other PCs on the lan,
but I
can't ping any of the other PCs from the new PC. I can map connections from my new PC to all
of the others and share files on all of the P:Cs. The only thing I can't do is get to the
internet over my dsl line that is on one of the older PCs. All of the other PCs access the
internet using internet
connection sharing (ICS) via an ethernet hub, but the new PC won't connect via ICS.

The new PC has XP Home as the OS. When I list the Network Connections on the new PC, I get
NVIDIA nForce MCP Networking Adapter (labeled Local Area Connection), MAC Bridge Miniport
(labeled Network Bridge) and 1394 Net Adapter (labeled 1394 connection). None of these are
familiar to me. I've tried to check the XP Firewall on the new PC, but it doesn't appear as an
option under any of the above Network Connections.

Any ideas to solve my problem?
Thanks.
Tom

I read an earlier comment above to turn off the firewalls on all of the PCs. I did that and the
new PC was able to connect!!!! I restarted the firewall (Zone Alarm Pro) on the PC that
connects to DSL and the new PC is still connected. We'll see how it does when I restart
everything again.

While I am now able to connect to the interet through ICS, I still can't ping from the new PC
to any of the other PCs on my lan. Why is the ping not finding the other PCs?

Open the Network Connections folder, right click the Network Bridge,
and delete it. XP created it automatically to allow you to connect
computers on two different network adapters -- Ethernet and IEEE 1394
(FireWire) -- to each other. If you don't have a FireWire network,
there's no need for the bridge. XP doesn't allow firewalling the
network bridge, so that option doesn't appear.

Then, disable and enable the Ethernet connection and try network
access again.

You were very helpful. This is my first PC with fire wire ports. I didn't realize that the
bridge was to tie the two networks together. I followed your instructions and everything is
running smoothly now.
Thanks agaain.
