can't get to the internet through the explorer

at home, everytime i use my new computer(hp), on windows
desktop, i click the internet explorer, it goes to the
explorer for approximately a half second and returns to
my desk top. someone said it sounded like i needed
spyware and was contaminated. any ideas?
