Can't Get Sound Recording Mixer to Open

The Sound Recording Mixer will not open in Vista for Line In recording. I
tried installing the drivers for my Soundblaster but still don't get
anything. Does anyone have any ideas? I tried double clicking the speaker
icon but it doesn't work because it only opens the playing mixer that just
has 2 sliders on it for Main and Apps volume. There is no option anywhere for
switching to the Recording mixer.
Has the Record Mixer been removed because they want the Windows Sound
Recorder to be used exclusively now? The problem is the Sound Recorder
doesn't record MP3's.

First, ignore the message when posting that the post was unsuccessful. There
is something wrong with the newsgroup and if you are using the web browsser,
you will get that message, even when message is posted successfully. Second,
I think the sound in Vista is still very flaky. I can get some things
working some of the time, but not everything works at once. I either have
sound for my modem or sound from the mike, not both. I had to uninstall and
reinstall drivers several times to even get any response from the mike. I'm
on a laptop with Realtek 97 sound, and Vista supposedly installed some
drivers, but they were poor. Realtek has some vista beta drivers, but even
those aren't very good. I've read that Sound Blaster isn't going to support
all its cards in Vista, a poor choice, in my opionion.

Good luck.

Sorry about the multiple posts. It seems to be working again now.
I found the solution to the problem, the sound mixer file, sndvol32.exe is
missing in Vista. The same thing sometimes happens when updating to XP-SP2.
To replace it copy it from a Windows XP machine or unpack it from the CD and
paste it into the \system32 folder. More details can be found in this M/S
