Can't get rid of "0x800106ba" error message. Please HELP.

On this past Tuesday, I got the infamous "Application failed to initialize:
0x800106ba…†message! Since then, I’ve been trying everything that I could
find in this forum, such as: remove Windows Defender; then click on this
link

, download the latest upgrade (version 1593) and yada-yada… Still! I am not
in luck because once I’ve downloaded the upgrade; run it; and after the
scanning is done, the same above application error message shows up again!
It's like I'm going in circles here. No, wait, duh! Not like-- I AM
actually locked in a vicious cycle. Sorry, I'm just sooo frustrated.

Should I just reinstall my OS again? I’ve got the CD’s and I’m so close of
just reinstalling 2003 XP Professional I can't think straight anymore.
Whatever it takes to get rid of this darned message! Someone, please shed
some lights here. I thank you in advance.

From your post it's a bit hard to tell exactly what you've tried other than
to remove and re-install Defender. Please confirm you've tried the three
potential resolution steps in order as laid out in this KB from Microsoft
(all we know now is that you've tried step 1.)

I should think a reinstall of your OS would not be necessary nor would it
fix the problem, as your not on Vista where WD is a part of the OS.

Sorry about that. Yes, I have tried the three steps from the link that you
provided below and, yet, no success. Would you know what I can do next,
please?

I'm curious about your Operating System... you say it's 2003 XP
Professional, but is that Service Pack 2? Can you click My Computer then
go to
Help > About Windows tab and tell me what's the Windows Version on the
second line of that window that opens. Mine says:

Version 5.1 (Build 2600. xpsp_sp2_qfe.070227-2300 : Service Pack 2)

Also, does your XP version have the Windows built in firewall and security
center?
Did Windows Defender ever work correctly on your system without error?
Is your system date set correctly?
Are all your high-priority/critical updates installed by using Windows
Update then repeatedly doing Express Updates until no further updates are
delivered?
When you download WD v 1.1.1593 do you download to disk first or do you
just run the install in place?
Are any Anti-Virus or other Anti-Spyware programs active while you're
attempting installation?
Does your system pass the Windows Genuine Advantage Validation during the
WD download?

OK, let me try to answer all of your questions to the best of my knowledge
as follows:

* My 2003 XP Professional is Service Pack 2 and after having checked for its
version, I realized it was the same version as yours: Version 5.1 (Build
2600. xpsp_sp2_qfe.070227-2300 : Service Pack 2)

* Yes, my XP version does have firewall and security center.

*Windows Defender has worked correctly on my system and, maybe, a few months
ago, I think I got some type of error message that I needed to do an upgrade.
So, I did the upgrade and everything went back to normal. I think this may
have happened late last year.

*I don't know how to check whether my system date is set correctly or not.
How could I do that, please?

*Yes, all of my high-priority/critical updates are installed and set
automatically to look for updates every day at 3 AM.

* As for downloading WD, here are steps which I've been taking:
1) Go through the maintenance wizard just fine;
2) Update Windows Defender and install it;
3) When Windows Defender gives "Install" complete; I click on "Finish"
4) At this point is when the application error message appears again.

*I removed my anti-virus program (Norton) completely until I'll have
resolved this WD error application problem. And I don't have an anti-spyware
program active while attempting installation.

*Yes, my system pass the Windows Genuine Advantage Validation during the WD
download.

So, Dave, as you can see above, I have followed every single step and the
only thing that I can think off is the system date being set correctly
because I don't know how to go about doing that. I'm really hoping that one
is where the problem lays.

Please don't give up on me. Let me know your thoughts and ideas based on my
above answers.

Hi;

OK your on XP-SP2, so no problem there. The 2003 part had me wondering.

System time/date is set by clicking the clock on the taskbar... right or
left I don't remember and my own clock is no longer standard.
Defender is sensitive to the date being off due to the constant updates.

That error code was usually seen when running an expired version and fixed
by just reinstalling the current release, so it's weird that a simple
re-install is not working for you.

Is the Windows Defender service able to start? Right click My Computer >
Manage > Services and Applications > Services >
scroll to Windows Defender highlight it and then try Starting the service
if it's not running, it also should be set on Automatic as it's startup
type (in it's properties - accessed & set via a right click). This service
is dependent on Remote Procedure Call, so that service would be worthwhile
to check at the same time in that same Window.

About the only other thing I can think of other than what was already
mentioned is to try a good cleaning prior to any further re-install you
try. CCleaner is very commonly used in this newsgroup, if you don't use it
already, and it's available here (pick the slim build):

In the Cleaner options de-select Windows Defender under the Applications
tab and under the Windows tab don't select any advanced options right now.
If you do any Issue Cleaning (registry), do let it take a backup when it
asks if you want one before the registry cleaning... which it will give you
the chance to specify just before the cleaning starts.

This is so discouraging... I followed all of the steps that you mentioned
below and -yet- I still got the same error message after having installed WD
and it'd began the scanning.

hey there i know exactly where you're coming from. hey missy I think you might of not recieved the newest upgrade for Defender. I was recieving lots of different wrongs, so I would just walk away, like leave it for 2,3,5 days. Now today I was informed the newest upgrade, or the fixer upper is available today. It is Windows Defender x64 msi . have to have the msi printed with altogether okay! I may be wrong tho so please check it all out completly first please. and remember just came available late this afternoon. Could you please let me or the discussion window
