Can't get on to company domain

I have two computers next to each other. One is a regular PC with Windows
2000. It's a corporate machine, completely locked down -- you can't even
change the start menu. It logs in to the company domain okay.

The other is a Windows 2000 installation of Virtual PC 6.1.1, running on a
PowerBook. It does not log in ... but it used to. A few weeks ago I
formatted my Mac and went from Jaguar to Panther, and with this latest
install of VPC, it no longer logs in.

When I use the Network ID wizard, it gets as far as finding my profile on the
network, but then when I try to use that profile, I get an "unauthorized"
error. It's as though it knows it's a different piece of hardware, yet it
had worked earlier.

I'm pretty sure I've covered all the variables I replicated last time, such
as the name of the PC, my user ID and password, and checked for typos. Is
there some other setting that I'm missing? Are there some files or registry
settings I can copy over?

I can't imagine that some difference between Jaguar and Panther is causing
this. One possibility is the actual VPC installation. I had lost my
original purchased download from Connectix and had to resort to a binary
download from a newsgroup. I've had odd problems with it, such as when I
tried to install those extra plug-ins it failed with a "such-and-such a file
did not decompress properly" message and then the video would lock on 800 x
600. The other day Microsoft sent me a replacement CD; I've installed that,
and the errors have gone away ... but it still won't log in.

Whats the exact error message text?

Have you considered removing the machine's ID from the domain and then
rejoining the domain?

I think it's "Access Denied". I'll have to look this evening, and will get
back to you.

Umm, I'm not sure how I would do that, but in any case if this means getting
in to the domain itself, it ain't gonna happen. IT won't even allow
"personal" computers to be installed on the corporate network, and won't even
begin to support a call from me for this kind of thing.

One thing I'll try tonight is to log on to the domain from another corporate
workstation. I'm sure it will work, since people do log in using other
people's workstations, but I just need to make sure for the sake of being
thorough.

If you ain't sure how you'd do it, and IT won't let you anyway, then we'll
try Plan B...
Rename your virtual PC workstation - right click "My Computer", choose
properties, look under 'Computer Name' and rename via the wizard, without
attempting to join the domain. Then reboot, and try to join the domain.

Thanks, but no dice: access denied
