My wife downloaded some "recipie program" and immediately lost her internet
and email capabilities. She uninstalled the program but the damage is
already done. When I got home I noticed that both norton internet protection
and antivirus were disabled. (as well as the internet connection) and
neither one could be started...

The comp in question is connected to the internet through a wireless network
wich is working fine.

Windows XP pro
service pack 2
amd 2500+
500MB 3200 RAM

Help!
Thanks
Tracy

When malware compromises a machine, it target those types of programs and
disable them. I don't know if that's the case but it does seem like a
strong possibility.

Has all the symptoms of a virus infiltration. Use this procedure to
scan and clean your pc -
http://www.claymania.com/removal-trojan-adware.html

P.S. You have to download the required components so you may need to
do this from an uninfected pc and burn them to disk.

If you have a copy of the malware - the recipe program zip it (to
prevent accidental execution), save it to disk and send it from an
uninfected pc to scan[at]virustotal.com (replace [at] with @) with the
subject 'SCAN' without inverted commas. Post the results back to us.

Thanks for the help Ian, unfortunately I wasn't able to locate any virus on
the machine. After following the procedure the problems were still there.
After several hours of trying to find the problem I threw in the towel and
spent today formatting and re-installing everything. As for the offending
program, my wife had already deleted it (and purged the recycle bin) before
I got to it and I'm not wanting to download it again. Here's the site where
she got it from,

I am very sorry you had to reformat. I was in a similar situation
today. Both my PC's on our lan got infected by different trojans and
virus that NAV 2004 Auto-Protect(subscription up to date)failed to
trap. Ultimately I used Adaware-SE and Panda free virus scan to clean
both of them. One pc had Troj_Agent-1 with an OptixPro.C virus, and the
other had a "dropper" virus although I lost the exact name. In neither
case did NAV website have any record of the viruses and it took adaware
and panda to clean them. In fact, the Troj_Agent-1 would disable NAV and
not allow it to run. That was how I knew I had a problem, NAV kept
shutting down and I could not restart it.
I was near reformatting and reinstalling a Trueimage backup, but Panda
saved the day! It was comforting to know I had a Trueimage clone less
than a week old to fall back on.

Please don't post working URLs that may download malware. Newbies are
prone to click on anything, and if it is a bad site, get themselves
infected. See the "hxxp" I changed it to?
