I did a clean install on a pentium 2 mmx/266mhz/128m ram.
After installing, it started up fine. The next time I
tried to boot up the computer, it displayed the memory
test, cd-rom, and "Intializing plug and play cards" and
then just hangs there with a blinking cursor. Any ideas?

- Does the mouse pointer move?
- What do you get when you press Ctrl+Shift+Esc?
- Can you boot into Safe Mode?
- Have you tried booting after removing non-essential
adapters (sound, network)?
It never gets past the start-up (set-up) screen. I have
no mouse pointer. It never boots into the OS. I haven't
tried booting into safe mode, I'll try that. I did put a
d-link ethernet adapter in, but I tried removing it and
the same thing happened (or didn't happen...)

To get an idea of how far to boot process gets, add the /SOS
switch to the appropriate line in c:\boot.ini:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows
2000 Professional" /fastdetect /sos
Forgive me, but I don't think I can even get to a point
where I can use DOS. Like I said, it just HANGS there at
the booting up process. All I can do is turn the machine
off.

Can you use a startup disk at all?

If your active partition is FAT/FAT32:
- Get a Win98 boot disk from www.bootdisk.com
- Boot with this disk
- Unhide & modify c:\boot.ini

If your active partition is NTFS - make a set of Command Console
diskettes:
- Insert your Win2000 CD in some other Windows PC
(even Win98!)
- Log on to the Windows 2000 CD
- Run this command: \bootdisk\makeboot.exe a:.
- Create a file a:\boot.ini (see sample below)
- Boot your machine from these disks
- Select R for Repair
- Select C for Command Console
- Enter the administrator's password
- Copy a:\boot.ini to c:\

[Boot Loader]
Timeout=3
Default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[Operating Systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000
Professional" /fastdetect /sos

My active partition is NTFS. I can't boot from any
startup disk. this is the f**ked part. The screen says:
Initializing plug and play cards.....
Card-01 ess es1868 plug and play audio drive
Card-02 LT Win Modem
Then a blinking cursor and thats it. I reset my bios.
Can't boot from CD-rom or floppy.

Why can't you boot from a CD? Did you instruct your
BIOS to boot from CD?

Same question about your floppy boot. If you instruct
your BIOS to boot from a floppy then the machine
will boot from a boot floppy disk, regardless of what
you have (or haven't) on your hard disk!

This is the whole reason I'm posting this. I can't figure
out why, but the system won't let me get past this
message. I changed the boot sequence in setup, but the
computer won't get to the point where it would boot from
anything - it just sits at this point in the startup.

If you have a problem with your BIOS and cannot get your
machine to boot from a floppy disk or a boot CD then
you are in the wrong place. This forum discusses Win2000
issues, and all previous posts focused on the Win2000
boot process. You may have a hardware problem, and
nothing that was previously said here will address
hardware issues.

I recommend that you repost in a hardware group,
under a subject line such as "Cannot boot with floppy
disk". After you have resolved your fundamental boot
problem, your Win2000 problem may go away all
by itself. If it does not, post once more by all means.
You're probably right. It seems like it is a BIOS issue ,
now. Thanks for your help anyway.

This sounds like an ISA device error or very old driver that Windows 2000 is
having problems with and is usually an ISA controller problem on old
computers. If you have an ISA device installed you may need to give it it's
own IRQ resources in the BIOS for Non-plug and play devices that Windows may
think is just that. Also, Go into the BIOS and make sure it is set for NON
Plug and Play system which will give the BIOS control and not Windows.
