Hi Melanie :-)

Try the following and see if it helps:

This error occurs when Windows Update can't download and install the
Windows Update ActiveX component. This problem sometimes occurs when a
firewall blocks the download of the component. If you've verified that your
firewall isn't causing the error, a possible solution for the problem is to
add the following sites to the Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) Trusted
Sites zone

You receive an "Initialization error 0x800A1391" error message and the
Windows Update Web site does not appear
http://www.kbalertz.com/kb_836961.aspx

If you have any kind of pop-up/ad blocker, try turning that off

Verify that your firewall is NOT blocking the download of the ActiveX
component.

Add the following to the Internet Explorer Trusted Sites zone:

http://Windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://v4.Windowsupdate.microsoft.com
https://v4.Windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://v5.Windowsupdate.microsoft.com
https://v5.Windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://Download.Windowsupdate.com

Hope this helps.

Hello Melanie,
Be sure your system is not infected with malware.
If infected with "Coolwebsearch" hijacker:

See webpage Dealing with Coolwebsearch and affiliates
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm#Coolwebsearch

Refine settings in Internet Explorer browser. Add the following

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

http://update.microsoft.com

http://download.windowsupdate.com

to the trusted sites list in the Internet Options.

To access the Exceptions settings.

1. Open Internet Explorer browser

2. Click Tools / Internet Options

3. Click the Security Tab

4. Click on the Trusted Sites Icon

5. Click on the Sites button

6. Unselect the check box "Require server verification (https:)for all sites in this zone"

7. Add all sites listed above

8. Apply changes.

Hi Melanie :-)

<i just wanted to thank you Jan for your quick response to my problem
w/automatic updates in winxp/ie6. One thing i'd like to ask and if you see
this and can answer: how do i verify that my firewall isn't blocking
installing the active x?>

Just disable the firewall, turn it off, as a test, then try the update to
see if it will allow you to access the Windows Upate and properly process.
Also, if you have Google, MSN or Yahoo toolbars, disable them. If you have
Yahoo Companion, uninstall it, it has been known to cause various problems.

If you have McAfee:

Disable the McAfee ActiveX controls Applet filters in the Internet Filter
window when you select Customize your VShield settings

"Your current security settings prohibit running Active X controls on this
page. As a result pages may not display correctly."
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/acxen.htm
or
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN;Q319585&LN=EN

And....as Maurice has suggested, the problem may be caused by scumware on
your system, so be sure to follow his suggestions for fully cleaning you
system.

Hope this helps.
