Can't get my files off of hard drive!

I had an 80gig hard drive installed on a Dell Optiplex computer with ALL my
stuff on it. It had been formatted and set up with Windows XP from the Dell
OS disk. I had to take it off that system (I won't go into the reasons why.)
Needless to say, I knew I wouldn't be able to use it as a master on another
system (because for some reason, using the Dell disk does that.) But I
thought I could access my files setting it up as a slave. I was wrong! I
guess because I had made My Documents folder private it won't allow me access
at all now. To make matters worse, now it says the hard drive isn't formatted
and won't even let me look at the folders I can't access. Help! How can I
save my documents?? FYI: My current system has XP pro and isn't a Dell.

If have screwed the disk formatting and the data is
important and valuable, suggest you confer with DriveSavers
www.driversavers.com before you do more damage to the files.

In addition to what Jim Macklin told you, I gave you a rather lengthy
answer in the other newsgroup to which you posted. If you can't find
it, go to Google Groups Advanced Search and search for your name.

Please don't multipost; crosspost judiciously if you must. Here is a
link explaining that:

Sometimes you need to manually assign a drive letter to a hard drive
partition under XP. Try doing this using the XP disk management tool.
Then, see whether windows explorer can read th disk.

If that can not be done, then it is possible that Dell was using some
non-BIOS software to get past a BIOS barrier (e.g., the one at 32 Gig).
That sort of patch is specific to a PC, or at least to the disk controllers
on the PC. If this is your problem, I am not sure what to do, other than to
place the disk in another Dell of similar vintage and then copy the file to
another medium, such as an external USB disk.
