Had been using Moviemaker with no problems whatsoever on my system.
Updated to SP2 (Which of course updates MM2 to 2.1)

No problems whatsoever with my system after the SP2 update except...
MM2 now will not run.

It will open to the main screen and look like it is trying to finish
opening but just gets stuck with an hourglass cursor. I have let it
sit that way for over a half hour once just to see if it would unstick
itself. Nope.

Only way I can get out of it is to close it with Task Manager.

The only difference on my system from when MM worked to now is the
application of XP SP2. Nothing else has changed. Same video
drivers..no new codecs of any kind installed..same audio drivers...no
other software...etc. Just SP2.

Sent multiple error reports to MS when it asks after I force the end
task in Task Manager. But nothing there of course.

Bucket number in Event viewer is
115810024

System Specs
XP Pro
Gigabyte GA 7VAX
AMD 2500 XP
ATI Radeon 8500 128 Meg card
SoundBlaster Live MP3+
1.0 Gig of Memory
Plenty of hard drive space.
C has 45 Gig free
D has 60 Gig free
E has 35 Gig free
Virtual memory set to let windows manage it

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Looks like it's hanging trying to preview the timeline. I assume MovieMaker
is set to automatically open your last project and maybe some funky timing
thing or a particular video file on your last project is causing the hang.

You can turn this auto load setting off by using the registry. Select
Start...Run and type in Regedit then click OK. Using the tree control on the
left navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MM20\Options. Once
you've selected the options line you should see a number of values on the
right hand side. One of these should be LoadLastProject. Double-click that
value and change it from a 1 to a 0and click OK.

Now lauch MovieMaker and hopefully it should start OK.

Hello there,

I have created a small utility that will turn off Auto Load in Movie Maker so
that you can load Movie Maker and re-create your project...The Utility is
called Fix-It and is available free from my web site.....

Well I checked the Registry and it does not have an entry for
LoadLastProject even listed in the Options Key.

Thanks for the suggestions though Dean.

Hello there,

If you have never changed the setting Movie Maker will have not created the
entry...download Fix-It so that the entry can be correctly applied and set to
do not load last project

Tried your utility which tolf me Auto Load was off when I ran it.

So Set it to On and tried MM2.1 ...No go
Set it to Off...again no go.
(rebooted between each try just to make sure the new registry entry
was read)

Thanks for trying though!

Hello there,

If the required entry is missing the utility will first create it and then set
Auto Load Last Project to Off. I think I will have to modify the text so as to
make that more clear.

Sorry it did not work for you.....It means though that its unlikely to be the
last project that was a problem. We will have to wait for someone at MS to tell
us the reason I guess.

Hello again,

Because of a related success else where, May I suggest you download the Rename
Codecs utility from my site, make sure you read the FAQ on how it works and
what it does and try that....another chap with what looks to be the same
problem got rid of his old Codecs and his situation is resolved. Rename Codecs
will do what he did but leave the Codecs where they are so that when you want
to use the software that installed them you can restore the Codecs and continue
as normal.

Thanks for another good effort but no go. Let it auto rename all of
the codecs it found. MM2 still would not run.

Les,

Try moving your collection database out of the picture.... move it to
another folder, rename it, or delete it. Maybe it's getting hung up as it
tries to open and check it out as part of the startup process.

See the Managing > Collections page of my site if you need to know where to
find it.

Finally got it to open.

It was trying to import an .mpg file on startup for some reason. I
renamed the file using Explorer and then MM2 started just fine.

I then deleted that file from the collections pane.

All is well now!

Thanks to all who tried to help. It was greatly appreciated.
