Chris

I tried the full system backup, which seemed to work well.
Quick. No compression though.

Bu I can't get into the recovery environment by pressing f8.
The machine simply boots up normally!

Is there anything I can do?
I want to try restoring from the backup image.

You get into the Recovery Environment by booting from the Vista DVD.

The Vista Help says use F8.
I can now get to the list of safe mode options
but recovery mode is not among them.

Booting from the DVD simply asks if I want to install Vista.
I am now very puzzled!
I have a complete system backup on my second hard drive but can't find
any way to restore it!

You should have an option in setup to a repair an existing installation of
Windows Vista on the hard disk if you boot from the DVD. With diagnostics
tools for checking your memory, use a restore point and others.

Chris,

I have submitted a bug report to Microsoft to ask them to fix that help
entry.

It is not possible to do a bare metal restore of the OS since the repair
option forces you to select an existing copy of Vista on the hard drive.

Thanks. I got there eventually - and the restore worked flawlessly.
The instructions need improving - because a person needing to do such a
restore might well be in a delicate emotional state - and hence need
extremely explicit, clear instructions!

That is good feedback to send in via the Feedback link on your desktop. I
suggest using the "sentiments" link in the first paragraph rather than the
MBC.

Hi Chris, How did you get this to work. Under RC1 I did a completePC backup
to a USB external drive. When I try to restore this backup it gives me a
enumeration error and tells me it can't find any backup to restore. If I use
the dos box option I can access the the USB drive and see the
WindowsImageBackup folder with the backup in it.
