We have regained possession of a Hewlet Packard laptop that was used by an
ex-employee.
Problem is we can't get into it because we don't know the password and can't
get it from the ex-employee.

Is there a way to bypass this? Or to reformat the drive on start up - tried
all ways of booting up but always end up being asked the password.

Thanks
Ian

Does it start to boot Windows, or does it ask for the
password before Windows starts to boot?

There may be a password set in the BIOS, to clear that, open
the case and remove the CMOS battery.

Asked and answered in detail in the other newsgroup to which you posted.
Please don't multipost; it makes more work for everyone and will get you
*less* help, not more. See this for why:

Ta for heads up - but no idea what you mean by crosspost - wasn't sure if
this was an xp or a hardware issue!
