can't get in to use updates & patches

I have the worm or a virus or something. The error
message comes up during start up and says missing or
corrupt system. . . sys/config/exe.32 and there is more
but I don't have my notes. I see all of the fixes and
patches to try but I can't even get in to try them. Any
helpful suggestions?
 
I dont get any error messages: the downloads just freeze
at about 5%. It has also happened with Norton AV
downloads - cannot get updates.

It seems to hav ehappened after SP4 went live.
