I have exactly this problem, a sapphire 9800 pro, and no joy. I can't
count how many times I have reinstalled, clean from the dvd, upgrade from
xpsp2, formatting c: or not, every combination.
The card's recognised correctly and the MS WDDM drivers install
automatically but then don't start - Code 43. The ATI beta 2 drivers
have the same problem, they install happily ( as long as I have the
locale of the computer set to US ) but then don't start.
The only way I can get the card to use hardware at all is to install the
XP drivers in XP compatibility mode, and these give me something, the
desktop fades in, winsat aurora and d3d work but no aero, i.e none of
the DWM stuff. Without the XP driver it's code 43 all the way. Is there
anywhere I can try to diagnose what the root cause of the Code 43 error
is? There's nothing I can see in the event logs, and I can't make head
nor tail of what to do from the details in setupact, setupapi.dev and
setupapi.app logs
this from setupapi.app

I'm digging through setupapi.dev.log now, is there any way I can
manually force the driver through by identifying the failure points in
here? I can make some educated guesses about what's being said in here
but I don't feel like guessing, I'd rather have a reference of some sort
to identify the *real* problem, then I can let the installer work its
magic. Is this approach even possible??
Thanks in advance
Tom;
I was referring to the 9200 which is not supported and should not
support glass.
As for the 9800, I agree with you.
Whatever is causing the driver issue may need to be fixed by a Clean
Install if installing the drivers does not work.
Something is obviously wrong and it possibly goes beyond the video
card.
This is the nature of Beta and not totally unexpected.
Besides if it is a recent installation, there is little to lose and
much to gain.

The 9800 WILL work. Personally, I'd just reformat and reinstall. I've
had Vista choke on a video card change.
Tom
Craig;
Since the card is not supported, you can't.
There is more to the video requirements than memory if you want all
the features:

Before acquiring a video card, verify with the manufacturer that it
is on the list of supported video cards.

Hello,
I have recently been playing around with Windows Vista Public Beta 2
on another computer.
At first the PC had a very old graphic card in it and the glass
effect didn't get activated during install as the card wasn't
powerful enough.
So I stuck a Prophet 9800 Pro 128MB in there which is more than
enough to handle it.
With this 9800 Pro I kept getting error code 43 in the device
manager. Eventually I gave up and put in a 9200 128MB card which is
also enough to handle the glass effect.
With this 9200 it gave no errors in the device manager and the fade
effects now worked properly on the switch user screen etc. but the
gladd effect still did not work.
I tried to install the ATI beta Vista drivers but at the end it gave
some language and package errors. I checked on the site but the 9200
was not listed in the supported cards list even though it is a
RADEON.
So, using the Windows graphic drivers, how can I get the glass
effect working please?
Thanks,
Craig.
