Can't get Desktop to join Domain

I have my desktop and laptop connected through a cross-over cable with
thedesktop connected to the internet.

I can get the laptop to access the internet through the desktop.

But can't ping either computer.

On the laptop - My Network Places shows the Laptop Shared Folders.

The desktop does not show any shared folders (I have them selected).

It's like the desktop just won't join the domain - I've run the wizard a
million times - is there a manual way to confirm?

Thanks

Hi,

1) That's not a domain, it's a peer-to-peer connection. When running the
network wizard, treat it as a workgroup.

2) You probably have the firewall running, and that's a good thing unless
you have some other barrier in place. You will need to make exceptions in
the firewall policy if SP2 is not installed. SP1a and previous were not
friendly for this type of file sharing.

Here's some things to try and read.

1. Make sure the admin account password is the same on both machines.

2. Make sure both PC's are in the same workgroup.

You could also read this for more help :

Link :http://www.epinions.com/cmd-review-41D6-5C355BF-39FBC8A4-prod1

You could also setup static IP addresses on the computers as well like
192.168.1.2 on computer 1 and 192.168.1.3 on computer 2, dont use 192.168.1.1
because if you decide to add a router to your network you will probably find
that the router uses this address.

Hope that info helps ?
