I bought some cd-rw's last night to use for backing up my Quicken
accounts, but keep getting error messages that the "device is not
ready" or something. The Quicken help advises me to make sure the cd
writer in drive E: has been set up properly and refers me to the
operating system manual.

This is a Gateway system with XP Home and Quicken 2002 that was
staged by them and I don't have manuals. When I look at the Properties
of the E: drive, it says the device is working properly.

I think it's probably a software connection that needs to be made but
I'm a new user to all this and have no idea how to proceed. Can anyone
give me a clue?

Thanks.

This requires packet writing, a function not natively supported in XP. In
order to implement this feature you need third party software such as the
Direct CD component of Roxio's, www.roxio.com, Easy CD Creator 5 or the Drag
to Disk component of Easy CD Creator 6 or the InCD Component of Nero,
www.nero.com. Please see their web sites for versions compatible with XP
and compatible CD writers.

I went back and attacked the problem again and it turns out that I was
trying to write from Quicken directly to the cd and you can't do that.
Once I set up a backup directory and backed my Quicken files to that,
I was able to use it as a staging area and write to the cd.

You can do it directly, I'm doing it Quicken 2002.

Thanks. I'll check them out.
