i've tried several installs and uninstalls to get BCM running when Outlook
starts; it's all there in the Small Business folder, and SQL server is
running as a service, but BCM won't start. it's not listed in any Add-Ins or
anything.

does someone know what I can look for for a reason or remedy?

Thanks very much,
GN

Outlook may have disabled the BCM add-in at some point.

In the Windows Registry check:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Office\Outlook\Addins
\Microsoft.BusinessSolutions.eCRM.OutlookAddin.Connect.3
The value of LoadBehavior should be 3 for Outlook to load it.

wow. but that's not it. it is '3'.

what next? :o)

Stop Outlook. Go to Contol Panel's Mail applet. Check you profile.
Does it have a BCM store/database? If so remove it. Add a new BCM
store. Try starting Outlook again.

nope. simple Outlook profile with an Archives secondary pst file.

in the past, when BCM was First Run, I'd setup a database then, i think i
remember. this hasn't even happened yet. (I DID setup a Sample Co with
Accounting 2008, it's likelt in the MSSSMBZ SQL server db, though this didn't
prompt BCM like i thought it would... - i remember having to get those two
apps to connect in the past...)

Try creating a new profile, and then starting Outlook with that
profile; BCM 1st use wizard should run then.
