Can't get any scanner at all to work

Running W2K SP4.

I can install the software and drivers quite happily but the scanner is
either 'unavailable' or 'can't be found'.

I've tried an Agfa Snapscan, an Epson Perfection and an HP Scanjet. All have
the same problem.

The scanners all make their appropriate noises when the computer boots up
but that's the only time they ever do anything. After that the computer just
can't find them even though in Device Manager the scanners are there without
any issues.

However all install and work perfectly on an older computer running W2K SP4

I am going mad with this one and really don't want to have to re-install the
O/S.

Any help or clues or links very much appreciated.

Hi Duncan...

First thing that comes to mind off the top of my head is bios.

Possible that you haven't enabled usb support?

Take care.

Sometimes the scanner is not recognized because it is not in the
Device Manager as a USB device or because it is in the Device Manager
as a USB device when it is not.

The Device Manager only tells you that the device is there. It does
not tell you if the device works, is connected properly for the
program it works with, or if it is set up for the protocol of the
software.

My Epson Perfection Photo 1200 works just fine with XP SP2 and was fine
with Win2K as well... (and this is with Norton in both cases as well,
folks). So, I suspect it's something to do with your PC.

I'd agree with Ken. If device manager doesn't recognise the devices,
then it's most likely a connectivity issue. Since you're seeing the
same thing with all 3 scanners, the pc is likely the point of failure.

try the following:

1. confirm that the usb controller in your pc is active and working
properly with another usb device.

2. Disconnect all other USB devices for testing- plug the scanner
directly to the PC as well

3. if device manager still doesn't detect the scanners, then confirm
the STI service is running in Windows.

a. RT click on the My Computer icon
b. Select Manage
c. When Computer Management comes up, select Services and Applications
on the left window
d. expand and select Services
e. Now look on the right window and double-click Still Image Service (
My memory of 2000 is a bit rusty so the syntax may not be exact- but it
will refer to the windows still imaging service)
f. Verify that it's set for Automatic and Started.
g. If not, make the changes , apply - then reboot

~hope it helps...

'Still Image Service' OMM.

You can also get to Services via Control Panel -> Administrative Tools ->
Services; or from a shortcut omn your desktop if you have it (I do).

Sometimes an overzealous firewall blocks all communication once it loads.
If you have
one, try turning it off (temporarily, of course). I recently had this
problem with a printer.

Thanks everyone for the advice but especially to Danny who sussed it,

administrative tools / services / still image service

was turned off, no idea why but turning it on solved the problem.
