getting a new motherboard do i have to reinstall x

Hello, I bought a refurbished Dell desktop pc last
summer, and it came with Microsoft XP allready
installed. My problem now is that I'm getting a new
motherboard, and was told that I would have to reinstall
my OS. As I said allready, I don't have a cd to do the
reinstallation, so if I do have to reinstall, how would I
go about it?

I tried to find an e-mail address for Microsoft's
customer support, but all I found were phone numbers for
computer companies, and nothing for MS. I would really
appreciate any help that you can give me.

Scott.

You need to contact Dell. Microsoft won't support you since you have a
OEM vesrion of XP.

This is part of the contract between Microsoft and the OEMs so they can
sell systems at a lower cost.

Without a CD, there is no way to reinstall if you need to, whether it's
because of the new motherboard or other issues down the road.

And since it's a Dell, your support would have to come from them, not
Microsoft. It was their job to supply you with a restore method, and it's up
to them to provide support for their PCs.

If you call MS, they're just going to tell you to call Dell. They certainly
aren't going to send you a new CD.

Hi Scott-
As the other gentlemen suggested, consulting Dell (or the vendor who sold you the refurbished PC) is the best first step. If you are not successful in getting your situation resolved, please post back on this thread and we can work on a resolution.
