Can't Get Addresses from OL

I suddenly seem to have trouble with OL2K and Contacts. It could be related
to the fact that I fairly recently reinstalled Office 2000 Professional (and
currently upgrades and fixes including SP-3) If I try to compose an e-mail
message and click on "To" to insert the e-mail address of a Contact, I get
an error message: "The address list could not be displayed. The Contacts
folder associated with this address could not be opened; it may have been
moved or deleted . . ."

Click OK and then I get the Select Names window. For some reason there are
two "Contacts" displayed under Outlook Address Book. The first "Contacts"
seems to be what is displayed; it seems to be empty. If I click on the
second iteration of "Contacts" I can finally see all my contacts. If I go
to Control Panel, Mail, and select Outlook AddressBook in Properties I see
two Contacts folders with the same name, "Contacts: Personal Folders."
Obviously I could delete the empty or phony one-but in this window I can't
tell which is the real one. So I have an even chance of wiping out my true
Contacts. Apparently OL is defaulting to a set of Contacts that is really
non-existent. Is there a way to get rid of this empty Contacts "file?"
Without deleting the "true" set of Contacts? Incidentally I have also
checked Properties for the Contacts file (i.e., the one that show up when I
go to Contacts in OL) to be sure it is listed as the Addressbook.

Could this explain another problem I am having? The Insert Address feature
no longer seems to work in Word 2000. When I try to insert an address from
my OL Contacts, either using the button to insert the information into a
Word document or clicking on the icon in Tools, Envelopes, I get this error
message: "Unable to display the contents of the addressbook. The Contacts
folder associated with this address could not be opened; it may have been
moved or deleted . . . MS Exchange Client [80040201]"

Thanks!

Go to the dialog you described above and remove both references to
Contacts:Personal Folders. This will not delete your data. It will just
remove the virtual representation. Once you OK out and return to the
Outlook interface, you can right click on the Contacts folder and select
properties. Go to the Outlook Address Book tab to reactivate the folder for
use as an address book.

If you still have a problem after performing the above, then post back. :)

Thanks! Seems to work after a little bit of confusion. Only 1 question:
Now when I click on "To" in an e-mail message my Contacts pop right up.
When I click on the Insert Address button to insert OL info into Word
(either in Tools, Envelopes or just hitting the Insert Address Button on my
toolbar) what first pops up in the Select Names window is Outlook Address
Book, which is empty. If I click on Contacts then the Contacts pop open.
Is there any way to have the Select Names window open directly to Contacts?

You didn't mention if Outlook 2000 was configured in Internet Mail Only or
Corporate/Workgroup mode, but these steps should work for Corporate
Workgroup.

* Open Outlook and select Tools | Services
* Go to the addressing tab
* Should be an option of what address book you want show first
* You can also control the order of what address books are searched

Thanks. I have OL configured for CWG. I already had it set in that
Addressing tab to open "Contacts" first. Contacts come up first when I
address e-mail (Clicking on To) but not when using the Insert Address button
in Word. Any idea why these would be different, or if I have to change
something in Word?

There is no setting that controls this in Word. Most of us have found that
if we select the same folder enough times, Word will eventually revert to
showing it first, depending on whether you have more than one Outlook
profile or not.

How can I do this in OL 2002? The window that comes up in Control Panel,
Mail is quite different. We have Office 2002 and OL 2002 running in our
firm's network using a Microsoft Exchange Server. Here is what I am getting
now when I try to address mail by clicking on "To:"

ITEM WHAT'S IN IT
Global Address List -- Users in my firm; groups of users
All Address Lists -- Empty
All Contacts -- Empty
All Groups -- Groups in Global Address List
All Users -- Users in Global Address List
Public Folders -- Empty
Outlook Address Book -- Empty
Contacts -- My contacts

For OL2002/2003, open Outlook and then open the address book (ctrl + shift +
b). Select Tools | Options to get at the addressing tab.

To get at the Outlook Address Book provider, you go thru Tools > Email
Accounts.
