I had to reinstall win xp and afterwards, a folder that
was owned by a user that had a password can't be accessed
(access denied message). I recreated the user with the
same password...didn't work. I tried to force the folder
to be sharable with all users on the machine per an
MS 'how to' that a kind person on this message board sent
me, but I got an error message that the folder can't be
shared because access is denied.

I'm in a real bind...anyone have another suggesion?

I have the same Problame i cant access my old (my documents) folder what i
did i just made it private will creating the user name after this i hade to
reinstall the windows XP then i tryed to open the folder it did not open.

help plz if any one know how to fix this thing.

Nah.it wasn't encrypted. It was just your basic user
profile on the pc had a password.and after I reinstalled
windows, it just throws up an 'access denied' message
whenever you try to do anything with the folder that
was 'owned' by the user profile.

can you get to the properties of the folder and add yourself as a user with
permissions to the folder ?

If you made it private then it's encrypted. Unless the ceritificate used to
encrypt the folder is still on the system, the files are gone.

Then is there any way i can open the directory.
coz i tryed every thing to open the folder but its not working.

Is there any way to open this folder.

.
No...I tried that too. It just said 'access denied'
again! This so frustrating!!!!!

I'm in the same boat... sorta. I am trying to get to the My
Documents folder of a user on a HD. I have the HD set up as
a slave in my computer, in hopes of transferring the files
from the slave to my master as the slave is having driver
conflicts with some motherboards and needs a reformat. I
can access everything on the HD, except for the Documents
and Settings. I get the same Access Denied message, but
there is no user list or permission tab in the properties.
And I to get the access denied if I try and share it. Very
frustrating indeed.

There has to be a way around this. I understand why you
shouldn't be able to access them with no problem, as that
would be a serious loop hole in the whole 'user password
protected' thing, but there has to be a way.

Hopefully someone here knows it.

Make sure you're an administrator when trying to modify the file properties.
Windows ACLs use a unique user ID, not the username, so duplicating the name
won't let you access the file.

If the directory is *not* encrypted, you could mount it under linux and
recover the files as root. Have a knoppix disk handy?
