Hi,

I have a wierd situation after I just upgraded from Win Me to Win XP.
Everything works fine except... it seems that frp doesn't work through
browsers. I have a DSL connection and trying to do ftp via eitber Mozilla or
IE doesn't work though I can do it by running the Windows ftp program. I
think this may also have a side affect where some programs on installation
that use the internet for registration won't necessarily work either (the
registration part that is). I downloaded the free AVG virus scanner and it
can't get updates. The internet is otherwise working fine - i.e. I can surf
anywhere and I can get email from imap, pop3 and hotmail accounts without any
problem at all.

Can anyone offer me some advice here?

Thanks,
Ben

Experiment with the "passive FTP" setting in IE. You'll find the option
under Internet Options> Advanced. Also, if using a third party firewall,
check its help files for info regarding FTP.

Hi again.

The problem was that after I upgraded to XP I attempted to install Norton
SystemWorks which gave me an error midway and did not complete. This caused
the problem because after I went through a whole procedure to remove traces of
Norton from my system it started working again. Reinstalling Norton from
scratch also then worked.

Glad to hear you got this sorted out, Ben. Thanks for letting us know the
outcome of your ftp problem.

Sorry to hear that it was Norton at the root of the problem. I used many of
their programs for many years. Gave up after a particular error in one
version caused a great deal of trouble on my setup. The problem was
acknowledged by Symantec but was never fixed.

If Norton will play nice with your system, it's great. When it starts
wreaking havoc it can be a bear to straighten out. Good luck. Sincerely
hope that the reinstall holds for you and does not cause trouble in the
future.

Yes. Before reinstalling Norton, I had decided to go with AVG which has a free
version (though granted with no support). The problem was firstly, in order to
install it I needed some remnant of Norton because it kept coming up with an
error saying some .dll was missing from Symantec directory (strange given that
it has no connection to Norton). After googling for the .dll I found someone
else with the problem who also posted a solution (involved running some file
from symantec). Ultimately, it seems you can't totally remove Norton from your
system. I didn't go with AVG in the end because for some reason it still could
not get updates via my DSL connection so I decided to go through with the
Norton install again hoping for the best. Fortunately it worked.

If someone asked me what virus scanner to go for, I probably would not
recommend Norton due to the way it embeds itself into your system (I got it
free after rebate which was part of the incentive to use Norton). Just for the
record, here is a good antivirus comparison site:

When I switched from Norton's, I went with InnoculateIT which evolved into
Etrust's EzAntivirus. Have been quite satisified with it. If I had to go
shopping again, I think I would give F-Protect a spin. An older name in the
industry with a very good reputation.

AVG didn't like my system either. Hard lockup on the first restart and had
to use the recovery console to disable the service it adds to startup to
recoup. Serves many folks well but it sure didn't like my setup.

There are various sites that rate the antivirus programs. The top 3
contenders shift a bit with each wave of nasties. And it seems most
products make it into that top 3 at some time or another. While it would be
beneficial to pick a product from those that are in the top 3 most often, I
think that the deciding factor is what product works best with a particular
hardware/software mix.

I like (and use) the free version of AVG.
The only problem I had was with getting rid of the remnants of McAfee first.

A lot of my friends use it and love it too, zulu. I think it's a very good
program. I'm just saying that it didn't behave nicely for me.

Sure.
I was just intimating that the reason you had a problem was that you may
have had some remnants of an old AV program.

Gotcha. Good point and wish that had been the case but it was a clean
install.

Are you behind a firewall? If so, you normally have to turn on Passive (PASV)
mode for FTP. You can do this in internet explorer - tools/internet options,
and probably can do it somewhere in Mozilla/Netscape (but I think that the
default there is already PASV mode).

The commandline ftp program does not seem to be able to do PASV mode, as far
as I could tell (I remember having to find another program to do this - I
think that I used one called ncftp). Since your commandline version works,
maybe your problem is the opposite, and you need to turn off PASV mode in your
browser.

It may also be some issue with your service provider - they may have a proxy
in place, or some sort of port filtering that is stopping your browser from
doing ftp (but I would think that this would also stop the commandline one?)
