Hi folks. A couple days ago I got nailed by a "wareout" spyware thing.
It pretty much took over the computer (new internet browser, fake
security protection tool bar icon, system instability, unwanted
favorite bookmarks, etc. Hijack this along with lavasoft's adaware
recognized the problem. However, some problems remain and I am
convinced I have something else. The problem is I cannot get anywhere
in a virus scan. My updated Norton refuses to finish, citing an error.
Same for the Bitdefender.com free online scanner. Same thing for
Symantecs worm removal tools. Scandisk detects no errors and finishes
just fine, as well as disk defrag. I have also tried the scan in safe
mode while disconnected from the net. The spyware stuff can finish, but
not the virus.

Also, I noticed that my toolbar buttons are locked and cant be brought
back when I open new IE windows. Sometimes I will get my the standard
IE toolbar with buttons, refresh, back etc, but many times not.System
instability is an issue as well whereas this was a very stable setup
before( win2k sp4).

Thanks for any tips. this is quite frustrating ;)

Wareout is listed a Rogue anti spyware on Spyware Warrior.

For non-viral malware...

Please download, install and update the following software...

* Ad-aware SE v1.06
http://www.lavasoft.de/
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

* SpyBot Search and Destroy v1.4
http://security.kolla.de/

After the software is updated, I suggest scanning the system in Safe Mode.

I also suggest downloading, installing and updating BHODemon for any Browser Helper Objects
that may be on the PC.

* BHODemon
http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm

For viral malware...

* Download MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL --
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/Multi_AV.exe

To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close

Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }

NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through your
FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor related files.

C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal Mode.
This way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor's web site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky, Exit this menu and Reboot the PC.

You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you can
download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded the files
needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode [F8 key
during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to run in Safe
Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode.

When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more comprehensive PDF help
file. http://www.ik-cs.com/multi-av.htm

David - thx for the info, greatly appreciated. I ran all your tests.
My spyware programs can finish scanning, but my anti-virus can't. That
neat AV program you linked to creates an error and just stops in the
exact same palce as the other virus scanners( even all 4 steps). AVG's
free scan also stops in this place saying the scan was completed when
obviously it wasn't. The problems with the virus scanners occur in
normal and safe mode.

They all seem to be quitting with (and sometimes without) errors when
they reach my alternate temprorary internet files folder located in
"temp". My current use temporary internet files folder , the one
alongside the temp and history folder works fine. I can delete
temporary intenret files and windows history just fine from those main
folders.

When I try to delete everything in my Temp folder (as one should be
able to), the system crashes(also gives IE.exe has generated an error),
goes to blue then goes to desktop. If this happens a few times, I need
to restart. I cannot delete any of the folders in the temp folder,
wether in normal or safe mode.

Needless to say I am quite perplexed!

Thanks PC. Also of note is I can run scandisk repeatedly with no issues
or errors, as well as disk defrag. System is just not rock solid
stable after getting(and supposedly removing) the CWS variant.(win 2k).

Dump the contents of the IE Temporary Internet Folder cache (TIF)

start --> settings --> control panel --> internet options --> delete files

Delete all files and folders in the; %TEMP% directory and in; %windir%\temp

Open a Command Prompt.

In the Command Prompt type the following...

CHKDSK C: /F

If it replies..
"Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process.
Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts?
(Y/N)"

Choose - Y

type; EXIT

Reboot the PC.

A full Check Disk will want to be performed, allow it.

When it reboots, perform a defragmentation of the hard disk.

You can get to the Defragmenting program easily by executing; dfrg.msc

Start --> run ->
type; dfrg.msc

Shane, why are you attacking this person? If you have something to add
to my hijack list please say so. Thx.

Correct on both counts. Thanks for the tips.

"
Delete all files and folders in the; %TEMP% directory and in;
%windir%\temp "

Dave thanks for the great tips. Scandisk runs fine as does disk defrag.
Unfortunately, I cannot delete the files and folders in the Temp
folder. It simply says IE created an error and closes or crashes for a
bit. All the virus scans either quit, give a false "finished scanning"
message or an error message at this point in the file scan as well. I
can virus scan anywhere else on my system with no problems except for
the Temp folder.

Hmmm...

Earlier in this thread I metioned the Multi AV scanning Tool.

In it is a PDF Help File that has information on using a DOS Boot Disk (or a DOS Boot Disk
with NTFS4DOS).

In Normal Mode download the files for the McAfee , Sophos and/or Kaspersky scanners. Don't
perform a scan though when prompted. Create a DOS Boot Disk or if you are using NTFS create
a DOS Boot Disk with NTFS4DOS. Then boot from the DOS Boot Disk and execute one of the DOS
AV scanner Batch files.

C:\AV-CLS\DOSCLEAN.BAT <-- McAfee
C:\AV-CLS\KAVCLEAN.BAT <-- Kaspersky
C:\AV-CLS\SOFCLEAN.BAT <-- Sophos

I'd like to see the results of the DOS scanner(s) when completed.

Shane, why are you attacking this person? If you have something to add to
my hijack list please say so. Thx.

Because he is a thief and an annoying one at that. Go the proper websites
and post your HiJack This Logs on one or two of them and have them read
properly....never trust downloading from a total stranger's
website....particularly when he is not the author of the program!!

Just trying to warn you....and btw, if that is your real address below, then
you are in for a sh*tload of spam and viruses. Do NOT use your real address
on news groups.

HTH.....Heather

Dave thanks for your help. I solved the problem by moving the
secondary Temporary Internet file to the desktop and deleting it there!
For some reason it then allowed deletion. I couldn't even get it to
delete in safe mode. Must have been some malware in there causing
problems. Anyway, my toolbars seem to be back to normal, all spyware
and virus scanners coming back clean.

Thanks for your help as well, pcbutts. It was greatly appreciated.

I'm 'attacking' this person because despite the naive people - like
yourself - who respond to his exhortations to post their hijackthis logs to
whichever inappropriate newsgroup, believing he is trying to help, he is
not.

pcbutts1 is systematically posting to every major security-minded newsgroup
in the English-speaking world - despite the requests not to do so from all
highly-respected and long time regulars of such groups - clogging them but
more specifically their abilities to search therein, with hijackthis logs.

Regular, expert responders to newsgroup requests for assistance universally
desire that, before posting a question, a person searches the archives to
see if the question has already been answered. Many expert responders became
such, partly as a result of doing such searches themselves. Post hijackthis
logs and it soon becomes next to impossible to make searches based on
extrapolations, lateral thinking, or plain inexperience, because the
majority of results will be worthless, because every startup and run
location and item is listed over and over and over in post after irrelevent
post. The majority - thanks to pcbutts1 - give up searching, just as you
would if you'd been seeking to find the answer yourself. The newsgroup no
longer operates as efficiently as it did and fewer and fewer new expert
responders are likely to emerge.

pcbutts1 knows this is the effect and responds to requests (which inevitably
become criticism, then outrage) *not* to ask for hijackthis logs to be sent
*other than to forums specifically dedicated for such*, with an astonishing
degree of disregard for the opinion of others considerably more helpful and
considerably more expert than pcbutts1.

That disregard largely consists of, for example, telling people to '****
off' and calling females 'bitch'. There is no possible way that pcbutts1
could be acting from the goodness of his heart - he is a very nasty
individual and totally self-centered.

As we are talking about the diminished effectiveness of potentially every
security-minded newsgroup in the English-speaking world being compromised,
by someone who claims high intelligence, we must consider the possibility
that pcbutts1 has a criminal intent. If a person fails to see this, that
person cannot appreciate the incredible importance of the personal computer,
the internet, and the security of such, to the modern, English-speaking
world. When one does, one must assume that the reduction in it's
effectiveness is intentional and that only an insane person or a criminal
would attempt such.

One wonders what illicit endeavor pcbutts1 might make more likely to go
undetected by generally decreasing computer security? One would suppose it
would be the increased likelihood of trojans to go undetected. But
personally I think pcbutts1 is exactly the kind of sociopath/psychopath who
would ultimately come to something like attempting to assassinate the
President.

I have only sympathy for you if you actually think that "pcbutts" was
helpful....he merely provided links for you to use that were on his own
website....NOT THE AUTHOR'S.

In future, it might be wise to listen to those who know what he is.....and I
will not sully the ng with my description of what that is!!
