I have been trying to scan my system with Avast but it gets just so
far in the scan then the computer hangs up sometimes it gets farther
along in the scanning but it will not complete the scan. I have tried
Panda online scanning also it too will not complete the scan. Anyone
know what the problem is? I am using XP on a Dell 4400 desktop.
Thanks.

Did you try the obvious .. chkdsk, for instance? Your virus scan may be
trying to read a corrupt file that nobody else has looked at for years.
You may have to do a full surface scan to find some problems.

I did a chkdsk after reading your post, as a matter of fact I did
three scans. The first two caused the computer to shut down and the
third one gave me a blue screen with a stop error message, I
apparently have bad drivers now all I have to do is locate them and
try to correct the problem. Thanks for your help.

If it's always failing in the same place it is most likely a software
problem. Try safe mode (start, run, msconfig, and twiddle with the
options to stop various things from loading).

If it's more random, suspect memory problems (www.memtest86.com will
give you a tool to find those) or some other hardware issue (anything
from cabling to motherboard capacitors going South).

Lotsa luck!

I have not played with avast for ages, however you can set it to verbose
logging during a scan, (might be at coomand prompt with a switch) so do
this, and when it fails the OD scan open the log and the last file in the
lsit will be the last file that was fully scanned, from here you can then
find the next file and scan it individualy, and probably either delete it
or exclude it from future scans.
