can't find word as email editor in outlook

I just installed outlook on new computer (windows xp professional) and office
professional. When I try to enter a new message, says cannot find work as
email editor. I went into options, mail format and checked off use word as
editor. It stays checked until I try to type a new message in, then it
automatically removes the check mark in mail format
 
Both Outlook and Word must be the same version in order for Word to be used
as Outlook's email editor. Are they?
