I have an APC UPS that is connected to the PC via a serial cable. Cannot
install the UPS software as it cannot find the UPS in XP. I have installed
a new serial cable and have the correct software to use in XP. Any help
appreciated.

Doesn't a UPS (uninterrupted Power Supply) fit between the electrical socket
outlet and the power inlet of your machine? I've never heard of a UPS that
fits onto the serial port.......

Gordon,
Yes, it is between the electrical socket and the PC. It is connected to
the PC via a serial cable so it can get info from the UPS when there a power
failure. It uses this info to do an orderly shutdown of your programs and
the PC.

have you tried just installing the software and then seeing if XP sees it?

I have an APC with a USB connection. It works with its own drivers.
If you have an APC UPS visit http://www.apc.com/support/index.cfm
Here you find drivers, a knowledgde base and your can submit a question
to the customerservice.

I've been using a Compaq UPS for about 3 years without noticing (or
expecting it to have) a serial connection - but now I see it.
There's a sticker on the UPS that says "Do not use serial cable
Compaq P/N 142264: using this cable could damage your computer. Use
serial cable P/N 295245."
What gives? I'd have expected that all serial cables would be the
same - 9-pin, straight-wired. Is this not so? I've a 9-pin cable here
that fits the UPS but am reluctant to plug it into my computer.

TIA of any replies.

You need to refer to the manufacturer. Not all UPS are made exactly the
same. You read the thread on the Compaq, along with the "special" cable
required.
As an example of difference, my UPS has the option of using either a
standard serial cable OR a network cable. The UPS monitoring and shutdown
software came from the manufacturer of the UPS, PK technologies. Most
common is the APC brand name.
Try the APC website:

Lil Dave,
Went to APC and they sent me the new serial cable as well as the new
software. I connected with the new cable and tried to install the software.
Software could not find the UPS and quit the install.
