Current config: no Exchange server, WIN98SE, outlook 2000
and YES internet mail only,
Basically:
I have an inherited corruption in my pst file, related to
contacts, which fails to treat with the inbox repair tool;
Inherited from various profiles , and previous partially
successful imports ( of old PSTs, old PABs ex previous MS
Exchange 4/5 profiles -dating back over the years - now
that are all now retired ex-my prev Win95 and Off 97 ).
currently, unable to delete some old contacts, and unable
to add new ones. Existing okay ones can still be editing
and used fine. The error msg is :
"The messaging interface has returned an unknown error. If
the problem persists, start Outlook again." Refer
Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 195784 & Q195784
I had continued to bite the bullet because of the HUGE
number of contacts and # of outlook shortcuts and
assoicated subfolders -- which i had managed to keep along
upgrades-path (by clever work-arounds that i had done
by "back-packing" and "re-camping" my .FAV file,
extend.dat in the appropriate places, and plodding along..
Only once in the past 7 years did i have to regenerate all
my outlook bar shortcuts manually, and once I think i
did "J-cross" with differnt exchange/outlook profiles
ending up with this issue of contacts, noted above.
I am NOW getting up the nerve to radically solve it: i
suppose i probably have to go back to Workgroup MODE, and
have to move all my outolook subfolders to a new
PFolders .pst file, and then painstakingly regenerate all
my outlook shortcuts, and accordingly edit all my outlook
rules, as well.
(1) PLEASE provide your recommended step by step
procedure, Or Any other ideas/workarounds, if any?
(2) I am also planning to upgrade soon to WIN2000 or XP,
please confirm that it is still davanatgeous to resolve
this -- before the planned upgrade.
Much appreciated.

No you don't, nor can you.
IMO does not use the Outlook Address Book. It uses the Windows Address Book,
so troubleshooting and fixing problems with it entirely different than in
Corp/Workgroup mode.
Can't help without knowing what the problem is.
