Trying to help a friend, whom it appeared had multiple virus's, worms
etc.
After much work, finally I could get a firewall installed, and virus
scan. It appears both are running fine now but it was a Herculean
effort.
BUT
we cannot log onto websites requiring username passwords. We just
continue to get the log on screen.
I tried searching for the svchost.exe, and I cannot find it anywhere.
Asumming this is related to the problem, how do I get the file(s) back
in there?
Can't find the CD (I think the OS of Win 2000 came pre-installed)
Can't access http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ (just a blank
screen).

IN the words of Sting, Sending out an S.O.S.

It sounds most to me like the firewall rules. Possibly you've not
permissed HTTPS on (usually) TCP/UDP 443
