Hi,
I have a problem that is really bugging me. I have Access 2002 and
just two days ago I could create and open databases without any
problems. But suddenly something happen.

When I try to open/create a database I get an error message that I got
a missing *.mdw file. When I use the security tools to create a new
mdw file I can't do it. I searched the whole computer but I can't find
any mdw files on the computer. I also tried to repair and re-install
Office but it won't work.

I also got a problem, before the missing mdw, when I suddenly couldn't
open or create a database. Then Access crashes after just some
seconds. Any idea?

I'm grateful for any help...

The language here is German and we normally post our full names (given
name and surname).
Try following: Start the workgroup adiminstrator within Access and
create a new MDW. Then join to this MDW and try to create a new MDB.
Looks like your previous MDW got corrupt or lost.

Hi Henry,
I seemed to have put my message in the wrong directory. My german
isn't that good. But there seems to be some expertise here so I tried
what Henry wrote but I can't create a new MDW file in Access 2002. It
won't work. Do you have any other ideas?

(followup set to microsoft.public.access.forms only)

If you just open Access 2002 (and there is no system.mdw on your computer),
Access will create a new system.mdw for you and usually put it in
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Microsoft\Access
(depending on operating system).

What OS are you using? Do you have windows permission to this folder? Or,
if you are on an older OS, do you have windows permission to the windows
system folder?

Well, it doesn't create a file and when I try to do it I get a message
that I may not have permission, that there is not enough space
etc...I've seen this problem posted on this workgroup before.
Something I noticed when I try to create a new MDW file is that the
folder I try to write to becomes non-writable after trying from the
administrator tool in Access 2002. How could that be? I can create
files in that folder but not from Access.

I tried to change the permission for the folders individually but it
won't help.

The OS I have is XP Professional. I also tried to log on with
different users with or without administrator settings.

Check if you have enough space available on this drive and that you don't
run into quotas limitations. Try once to create a MDW file on a different
drive if you have one available. Are you trying to create the file on a
local drive?

Henry

I do have enough space but I'm not sure what you mean by quotas
limitations. I don't have any other drives that I can write to. Only
one partition on the harddrive and it is a local drive. I appreciated
all help you given but nothing has worked so far. Any new ideas?

Kind regards

Anders

If you don't know what a disk quota is and are only using local drives
then you probably will not have any disk quotas (drivespace limitations
for users) defined;-)

Anyway I can't find any other reasons :-(

Can you perhaps get a copy of another standard system.mdw of another
computer and copy this one to your computer? I maybe is a security
setting somewhere (or anti virus) that prevents you from creating an
..MDW file.

Henry

It's me again.

Maybe you just can't see them but they are there. Check your folder
options if you hide .MDW files from being seen. also try following:
- Make the fileextensions visible for all filetypes (Folderoptions)
- Make system and hidden files visible
- Search again for any .mdw files on any directory including system
directories
- If you still can't find any try following:
- Create a Notepad file (test.txt)
- rename it to test.mdw
Can you do this and is it still visible?

If you could find any mdw before, try again to connect to one of these
using Access' workgroup administrator.

Henry
