Can't find files

My friend had to reinstall Windows XP Home and now he can't find and access his
files that he had. He went to the documents folder and they are not there.
However, his computer is showing that 8GBs are taken up.

How can he access these files? I'm thinking they are located on another
(hidden) partition....?

The reason he had to reinstall was because Windows would not boot and the error
message was over a corruption of a configuration file, pci.sys. Because he had
a USB floppy drive, a Win 98 boot disk nor downloading a replacement file would
not work. Tried restoring the registry but got a blue screen error, and then
again when doing a chkdsk /r. Couldn't get to safe mode. So I suggested a
reinstall. : \

The laptop is a Sager, 738MB DDR SDRAM, 2Ghz P4, 30GB hard drive, external USB
floppy drive.

Try logging is as admin and exploring C: or perhaps right click on start
Start and select "explore all users" then navigate up a level and see if you
have two user folders with similar names. I believe if you create a new user
account with a name that already exists it does create the account but the
folder name is modified slightly to avoid the duplication.

He says that under the "My Documents" folder on his old user name the files are
corrupt or at least no longer function. Most of the files he tries to transfer
to his new folder results in Windows saying they can't be found, even though he
can search them and see the files.

He can't move or even delete them. And yes, he is the Admin.

I dunno if Home is the same as Pro, but he probably doesn't have permissions.
In Pro you take ownership as administrator, and change permisssions..

He says he can move music and movie files just fine, but not program files.

Sounds like the story is getting awfully garbled.

You said the exact opposite with files in My Documents

That shouldnt normally have any 'program files'.

Is he irish too ?

OK. Did he install them from there too ?
That normally wouldnt matter tho with modern
programs which will just install in /Program Files

The two versions of the story, now right at the top, dont gell tho.
And yes, he is. lol

Thats the problem, become a moslem |-)

He purposely downloads them in the My Documents folder and installs the
programs into that folder as well. Makes it easier when everything lies in one
single folder he says.

::shrugs::

The guy is a nut, and doesn't understand Windows.

The installed programs are useless after he reinstals the OS.
