There is supposed to be a common task button on the
toolbar but I can not find one. Not on the toolbar or in
the list of available buttons in the customize toolbar
window. Does anyone have any ideas how to activate it?
Thank you.

To customize the toolbars, just right-click on an empty part of one and
select customize.

You can also get there by clicking View | Toolbars | Customize ...

You may want to browse over the bottom section in

Yeah. But I went looking for that button and couldn't find it. But the name
is familiar. Anyone know what it does or where it comes from?

It's not a button, it's a toolbar that's on by default - shows you common tasks
like add a new slide and so forth. ISTR that the context changes as you change
views. That's about all I can remember about it. Which puts me miles ahead of
Clippie and PPT Help.

But soft ... here we go:

Tools, Customize
Click Commands tab
Scroll down and click Built-In Menus in the Categories list
Then scroll down to Common Tasks in the Commands list and drag Common Tasks to
the menu bar.
Close the Customize dialog box.

Now you can choose Common Tasks from the menu or use the little blue line at
the top of the menu to drag it off as a freefloating menu. There's the
confusion; it's a menu, not a toolbar.

Ah. And it parks itself by default on the Formatting toolbar, so you can
activate that toolbar then drag it off there as well.

And Clippie's still a waste of silicon.

Ah, Yes!

I did go to help and look and didn't find it. So, the score is:

Steve 1
Clippie 0
MS Help 0

Oh, right ... it goes without saying that I hit up Help first and only turned
to the clippidiot in desperation. ;-)
