Ok, I have spent hours and hours trying to figure this out. I have no
problem viewing and listening to my music from my desktop (main computer with
router attached to it), on this computer. (my laptop).

Why is that after following the directions (what I think was step by step)
the public folder and all the folders I chose to share from the desktop to
the laptop do not show up?

The printer that I have shows up, but the name is not right. Since the name
is not correct, it is not the same path, therefore not the same printer. No
other printers show up, anywhere.

I am at my whits end...any suggestions, ...anyone?

On the desktop, run net share command and on the laptop run net view
\\desktopipaddress command. You may receive a system error message. Please
back with the results.

Have a read of the above link re Vista File and Printer Sharing.
How to give Permissions are there, too.
If you are running Norton, etc’s Firewall, check its settings.

1st thing to do is make sure that the Workgroup Name of ALL the computers is
the SAME.

In Vista Network and Sharing:

Network Discovery: ON (So it can see the other computers)

Network set to Private (Public is for hotspots, airports, etc)

File Sharing: ON

Public Folder Sharing: ON (Vista’s Public Folder is the same as XP’s Shared
Docs)

Password Protected: OFF (unless you want to set up identical usernames and
passwords on ALL computers in your Network) If you have it ON, you will be
asked for a username and password when you try to access a Vista computer
from an XP computer.

Also, run the XP’s Home Network File and Printer sharing Wizard.

No information comes up when I type in the ip address command you ask about.
It says the syntax of this command is: Net: with a bunch of words
(Accounts, Computer, Config, etc. ) but nothing to give me any info about
them.

I did a IPCONFIG command and found this:

All my settings are as you note. I am running vista and McAfee on both
machines. I am still stumped. :(
