Can't even see myself in workgroup, what's up?

I am trying to set up a simple network between two XP Pro
machines connected via an ethernet connection. I ran the
Network Wizard on both and named the
workgroup "WORKGROUP" and gave each computer a different
name.

On one computer I tell it to View Workgroup Computers and
it shows itself only. On the other computer it hangs for
about a minute and then says:

"Workgroup is not accessible. You might not have
permission to use this network resource. Contact the
administrator of this server to find out if you have
access permissions.

The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently
available"

How can I not have access to my own workgroup? At the
very least I would think that my own computer shows up.
I get this message even when the other computer is
diconnected from the "network".

What gives?

Hi
Have you enabled file sharing on the drives and/or
folders you want to share across the network. Right
click on the drive or folder and then on sharing &
security.

Are you directly connected or are you using a router/hub?

If direct connected you must use a "Crossover Cable".

To determine your ip and subnet addresses do the following:

go to start click run and type "cmd" dos box opens
type "ipconfig /all" look at the ip address and the sub
net. The sub net should be the same the ip addresses
should have the first three sets of numbers with the last
set different (ex. compA= 192.168.1.100 and compB=
192.168.1.101)

yes, thank you Rose. Unfortunately the problem seems to
be more fundamental. I have even made my whole C: drive
shared, but no matter what, even with the computer
completely disconnected from the network, it is telling
me I cannot join my own workgroup. The problem is
exactly the same as the guy whose post is "Why can't my
computers SEE each other."

I'm not sure I understand. The two computers were
connected with a router. I have even disconnected the
computer from the network altogether. Just sitting there
connected only to the cable modem (can't talk to you
without Internet connection.) I don't understand why my
computer doesn't show up on its own workgroup. Right now
I don't even care if I can't get the other computer to
show, how can I not be allowed to access my own workgroup?

check the firewall status and or turn it off for now. Make sure the pc's
are on the same IP range and the network adapters are working .

To all who offered help. Thank you.

The problem did appear to be Norton Personal Firewall. I
had disabled it, but apparently that was not enough. I
had to uninstall it before the network worked.

Thanks again.

Randolph,
Microsoft Knowledge Base article 318030 give a resolution
of this problem ( enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP and make
sure Browser service is started.) You can try this,
but it did not change anything for me - still 'can't
even see myself' Bill

I have the same problem with XP Home and XP Pro.
I caanot see my share in same computer in the workgroup.
I have tried following:-
a) Checked OS Firewall- Is ticked off.
b) Using same protocol TCP/IP.
c) I have created share not the whole drive only certain folder.
d) I am using the same log in for both the computers.
In fact I spend 3 hours daily evening to get it connected. I am
getting fustrated now.
My be I will end up re-installing the XP Home. Becuase XP Pro seems to
be OK. I can see my share if I remove the network.I do not want to use
the Network Setup wizrd becuase it just distablise the whole cable
connection.
