Can't enable XP firewall on dialup connection

Tanya

I am having trouble activating the firewall on a dial up
connection in the XP consumer product. The machine
was "out of commission" for 9 months. The first time it
was online after being fixed it was infected with the
Blaster worm. The machine was cleaned up using the
Symantec tool, and the windows patch installed along with
XP Service Pack1. However, I can't activate the XP
firewall. When I select the dialup connection and click
on "change settings", or right click on the dialup
connection and select "properties", nothing happens. I
can enable the firewall on the LAN and 1394 connections
without any problem. I tried deleting and recreating the
dialup connection, but still no success. Any suggestions
would be helpful.

I have the same problem with trying to activate the XP
Home Firewall. The control panel says my (only) modem
is "disconnected". Go figure. Sorry I have no solution.

Greetings --

You'll either need to find a 3rd party firewall that is compatible
with AOL, or switch to a real ISP that is compatible with the real
Internet..

AOL is an on-line content provider that ignores international
Internetworking standards in favor of its own proprietary products,
and has deliberately made its connection software incompatible with
both WinXP's built-in firewall and WinXP's Internet Connection Sharing
feature. AOL's proprietary connection applet is deliberately designed
to preclude your setting/adjusting any of its properties, to include
enabling/disabling WinXP's ICF and ICS.
