I posted this a few days ago but have had no takers. Here it is again in
case anyone has an answer and missed it first time around.

I have set the option in Maintenance to have the "Deleted" Folder emptied
when
Windows Vista Mail is closed. This used to work fine in Outlook Express
but Mail seems to completely ignore the instruction and the contents of the
deleted folder are remaining in situ virtually unscathed, I say virtually
because it does seem to reduce by one mail each time it is closed. Am I
missing something somewhere?

Since this symptom is similar to the 'stuck' email issue,
you may want to try Microsoft's fix:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/941090
"Messages may be stuck in the Outbox when you use Windows Mail on a
computer that is running Windows Vista"

That page offers two download options. Unless you know for sure
you have 64-bit Vista, use the 32-bit option.

Also, although only the outbox is mentioned, it works for all stuck
emails regardless of which folder they are in.

Thanks Gary, I'll give it a whirl.

Update installed OK but no change. I had 48 items in the Deleted Items
folder, close Mail and, on reopening, there are 47. Any further thoughts
please?

At this point you have tried all the easy fixes. There are a couple of
more drastic fixes left:

a. Go through the somewhat laborious "Reset Windows Mail" process:

or
b. Upgrade to Windows Live Mail:

I had also put in a request to the laptop manufacturer for a fix and they
suggested a manual deletion of everything in the Deleted Items folder and
then restart Mail and reapply the setting. I did so, then sent some more
mails to the Deleted Items folder and it actually seems to have done the
trick. So if anyone else has a similar problem this is worth a try.
