Can't edit 'doc' or 'rtf' document with Word or Wordpad!

I'm using Win-XP and Office XP. I'm having trouble opening either a 'doc'
file or a 'rtf' file and trying to edit it. I can keep hiting a key for a
long time, and nothing happens. I try to delete a highlighted passage.
Again nothing happens. Wordpad does the same thing. There is no problem
with a 'txt' file.

What is the problem? How do I deal with it?

Is the problem only with one document or all .doc or .rtf files? If it
is only the one try Edit-Select All-Copy and then paste it to a new
document.

If it is with all documents try doing a repair or reinstall of Word (or
Office if that is what you are using). Control Panel-Add or Remove
Programs, hihlight Word (or Office), click on change and do a repair.
