MovieMaker crashed as I stopped a capture of a broadcast program. Instead
of a WMV file I ended up with an ASF file that plays in WMP, but can't be
played or edited in MM. As a last resort I can play it into a vcr and play
the tape and capture again, or I can connect two computers and capture again
without a vcr, but I hope someone has a trick for fixing the file. Anybody?

I've converted wmv files that wouldn't import into Movie Maker, to other wmv
files that would.... a pretty rare situation.

You can start by renaming the file from asf to wmv and trying Movie Maker
again... if not, try any utility/apps that imports it. Things to try
include:

EasyX Video Converter
TMPGEnc
BlazeMedia
EO Video
Movie Maker 1
MovieXone
STOIK Video Converter
Windows Media Encoder
ArcSoft's Video Impression 2
Premiere Elements

You might need to do it in 2 steps.... asf to something like MPEG2, and then
MPEG2 to AVI

I forgot to try renaming. I tried Boil-something converter, Windows Media
Encoder, Nero, MovieShop, neoDVD. Will keep trying. Thanks for the ideas.

Once I renamed the file from asf to wmv, neoDVD imported it and converted it
and burned a beautiful DVD. I wish I had thought of the the other times
I've had crashes.
