Hi!

I have Win2k Server, AD, DNS on an internal network.

Mail is hosted elsewhere.

Internal AD server name is ABC.com

external mail server is mail.ABC.com

If I am inside the network, and I send mail from
(e-mail address removed) to (e-mail address removed) it is never delivered (and there
is no record of the attempt at mail.abc.com).

If I log on to mail server and send mail from (e-mail address removed)
to (e-mail address removed) it is delivered. Also, e-mail from any user
inside network to any other domain works fine, as well as
outside email in.

I suspect the problem is the domain names. When internal
email between domain users is attempted, I do not think
it ever hits the external mail server. Any ideas on how
to fix this?

Thanks!

On your Internal DNS server in the abc.com Forward Lookup Zone create a new
host named mail and give it the IP of your external mail server.

Hi Jason,

Thank you for the posting again. As you described, you have the mail
record on your internal DNS. This is how internal users can email users
that are not on this domain.

Regarding this, we suggest you check and configure the settings on the
Exchange server. This looks like an Exchange server related issue based on
your description.

Use the Exchange System Manager to view the default virtual SMTP server.

1. Right-click the virtual SMTP server, and then click Properties.
2. On the Messages tab, specify the ISP's mail server under "Forward all
mail with unresolved recipients to host".

In this case, any e-mail that is sent to users that do not exist on your
server will be forwarded to the ISP's mail server.

If this doesn't resolve the problem, we think it is more like an Exchange
server related problem and we suggest you post to Exchange server public
group.

Hope the above information and suggestion helps and answers your question.
If anything is unclear, please let me know.

Sincerely,

Cherry Qian
