Can't Download updates.

I am running a WinXP Pro 2.5GHz P4 1.5GB DDRAM 120GB HD Sony Vaio PC and am
unable to update from windowsupdate.microsoft.com. I am able to scan and
choose which security update to download and update, but after I click on I
Accept to start downloading, the screen would lag or stop on "Preparing to
download" window.
I had left the PC on for 7 hours, and it was still preparing to download the
files.
Is there any reset that could be done to fix this problem?
I appreciate all the help I can get.

Turn off any McAfee or Norton programs and try again. If it still doesn't
