Can't download large files (problem happened within last 2 years)

I have XP home installed, and use the Walmart Connect internet service. But
since I've had the computer, I downloaded large files, such as video files or
"yahoo messenger", which is about 8 mb. Within the last couple of years, I
believe XP files got corrupted, but not sure which ones. I can't download
large files. If I try the yahoo messenger 8Mb one, it downloads for about 2
Mb, and then the download locks up and doesn't move. Same for video files.
I reinstalled XP (but didn't do a fresh install, just updated the files that
were already there. I also reinstalled my internet service, I don't think
the problem is there cause friends have that service and use the same phone#
to dialup and no problems.

I'd hate to lose all the files on the hard drive by formatting it and doing
a fresh install. Right now I use the "yahoo messenger" that I downloaded a
couple of years ago (no problem then), and I'd hate to lose that and not be
able to download it again.

Is there anything else I can check or try to help with this problem?

A 2 year old problem, and you still don't know that you can save your
files to CDs, DVDs, or another hard drive.

Do you mostly use your computer to prop open doors?

OUCH!! That hurt! (not me, but I think the computer has an identity crisis
now). The main reason is I'm trying to find out if I can fix this problem by
changing a certain part of XP is I'll lose the yahoo service, which doesn't
just preinstall from a file, but you have to connect to their server and
download their 8mb file. So far that has failed every time I've connected to
it for the last couple years. It would be much easier to just copy a certain
part of XP, but not sure how.
