I have W98 with IE 4.0 and have been unable to download IE 6.0 from
microsoft. Each time I try, it runs for a little while and then I get an
Icon that I can only describe as a piece of film with the bottom right hand
corner torn off... Does anyone know what this means???? I'd really
appreciate any feedback..

Thanks!

Have you tried using Windows Update? It will be a two-part install: After
installing IE6 SP1, you will need to return to Windows Update to install
additional critical patches for IE and Win98.

To assure a clean install, your anti-virus application should be disabled
and all other running processes closed before installing anything, including
Windows Updates.

I did try using the Windows Update but you have to have IE 5.0 and I only
have 4.0. I will try disabling my anti-virus application.

Hi Stingray :-)

You might try the following and see if it will help. Make sure that your AV
is disabled, especially, if you have any Norton products, and disable your
firewall. Also, if install from the hard drive, it is best to do the install
from Safe Mode.

When you go to Windows Update, are you getting an error message stating that
you're using an unsupported version of IE? Several of these are known to
cause that problem:

1) Zone Alarm Pro [Private Header Info - enabled?] Reset "Ad Blocking" and
"Cookie Control" to "medium" "Mobile Code Control" = Off

2) Symantec (ISS\NIS) [Enable Browser Privacy - enabled] Active Content -
"Allow All Scripts To Execute" Problem: some sites cannot detect the 128 bit
encryption Solution: Completely remove and reinstall NIS.

3) Any "ad blocking" software that blocks "http_referer" or contains entries
that are blocking access to the desired site.

4) HOSTS file that contains entries that are blocking access to the desired
site.

5) Cookie blocking software that are blocking "required" Cookies.

6) Pop-up blockers that are stripping header\url info.

7) WebWasher Standard Filter/URL Filter

8) Make sure the following entry is not corrupt:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings] "User Agent"="Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Win32)"

Note: "Win32" = Windows 98\ME Other versions = (compatible; MSIE 6.0;
Windows NT 5.0;)

Thanks for all the great information, I have just one more "stupid" question,
if I load IE 6.0 SP1 (currently IE 4.0 w/ W98) what if anything do I have to
do to my Outlook Express (also v4.0)....

Probably nothing, *if* you have OE closed and your anti-virus application
disabled when you install IE6 SP1.

After installing, return to Windows Update for additional patches you will
need.

You're very welcome! As PA Bear has said, be sure to have your AV disabled,
and no other windows or programs open or running. Be sure to check and make
sure nothing is running in the background so that nothing interrupts the
install. Then go to the Windows Update site and install the updates. Note:
The critical updates should be installed one at a time, and then a reboot
afterward, before installing the next one. That way, if one should cause a
problem, you will know which one it was, and not have to uninstall them all
and start over to correct. :-)
