Can't download executables or yahoo companion

Hi. I can't download any executable file. I also can't download
anything that installs an object, like the yahoo companion toolbar.
I can download MSOffice files. help....thanks!
 
also strange is that microsoft update works fine but microsoft office
update doesn't work at all.
 
the error message is: "Internet Explorer cannot download xyz.exe from
www.xyz.com. Internet explorer was not able to open this internet
site. the requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found.
please try again later."

i have to get into netscape and copy/paste the url into it to
download. ugh.
