Can't do Web Search

My 94 yr. old Aunt in Florida has a computer with Windows XP that has lost
it's ability to do a web search. This means typing in the searcy box, be-it
Google or Yahoo or Microsoft, etc. and clicking "search" results in an
message that says contact can not be made, the web is not accessible. What
does work, is clicking on a link or using the "address bar" to go directly to
a known web address. These options work.
So, she can get online (Net Zero) but options are limited to going to only
know web addresses.
Before she calls for assistance from Microsoft or a computer repair person,
I'd like to know what might cause this kind of situation. Maybe you have a
simple remedy or can point me to a solution from an previous article.
Thanks.....Ron

Hi there, are you aware of the problem with a recent update. It may be relevant
if your aunt has done some updates lately.

Problems in Windows Explorer or the Windows shell after you install security
update MS06-015
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/918165

Revised - Vulnerability in Windows Explorer Could Allow Remote Code Execution
(908531)
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS06-015.mspx
Note according to the Bulletin, MS will release an revised version of KB908531
(MS06-015) on April 25th - See FAQ section

For those who are experiencing problems now after installation of the update and
who have Hewlett Packard's Share to Web Software, there are two registry patches
to choose from (run either one or the other) not both (NB both patches do the
same thing):

Ottmar Freudenberger's is available at:-
http://patch-info.de/WinXP/Downloads/KB908531_Share-To-Web.zip
(Note this is a Zip file and will need to be extracted. It contains a REG file
which needs to be imported into the registry)

and Kelly's patch is available at:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Line #383 - this is a vbs file and instructions on how to use such files are at
the top of the page.

If you hare not using "Share to Web Software" then consider the following:

Are you using a Nvidia video card? Check for updated drivers.
http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp

Do you have Kerio Personal Firewall, if so make sure you read the article
carefully: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/918165

If you uninstall the update make sure you read the section titled "Workaround
for Windows shell vulnerability" under Vulnerability Details:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS06-015.mspx

Also you'll need to check Automatic Updates and make sure that the update isn't
automatically downloaded - Configure Automatic Updating in Windows XP - 306525

TaurArian. Thanks for the suggestions and detailed information. I've
spoken to my Aunt. Unless I go to Florida, she will have to hire a computer
expert to help.
She doesn't do any maintanence on her computer, I doubt any of the windows
updates have been made, unless they happen automatically. She can only use
the computer for email at this point. I've done all I can.
