Hi people, come across something I haven't seen before. Machine connects to
the net ok, but cannot display secure web pages. For instance the bank's
home page comes up ok but can't get to their log on page. The bloke is also
running msn explorer and can't log onto there either. There seems to be a
lot on the web on it but so far nothing really helpful. yeah, I've checked
all the security settings, disabled microsoft's firewall, and he's not
running any 3rd party firewalls, just AVG antivirus. Any suggestions?
Cheers...

Do *not* turn off your firewall for any reason, that's asking for trouble.

Test your ability to connect to SSL sites using a SSL test site.
https://www.stanford.edu/group/idg/leland/samples/secure/test.html

A successful test will show a page with:

SSL test
Thanks for using SSL

Make sure that the SSL port (port 443) is open on your network/firewall.

IE | Tools | Internet Options | Advanced tab |
 Use SSL 2.0
[[Specifies whether you want to send and receive secured information through
SSL2 (Secured Sockets Layer Level 2), the standard protocol for secure
transmissions. All secure Web sites support this protocol.]]

 Use SSL 3.0
[[Specifies whether you want to send and receive secured information through
SSL3 (Secured Sockets Layer Level 3), a protocol that is intended to be more
secure than SSL2. Note that some Web sites might not support this
protocol.]]

Gidday Wesley, thanks for the response. Tried your idea, and didn't work, as
in couldn't get to that site either, as I thought would happen. Hunted a bit
more on the net and found an article about re-registering the softpub.dll
file. Start/Run/ regsvr32 softpub.dll Tried doing a secure
site again, and it worked like a charm. I guess ya learn something every
day. All the best
