When I attempt to disable my internet connection on Windows XP
Professional SP2 by right-clicking the icon and clicking "disable", I receive
the following error message:

"Error Disabling Connection

It is not possible to disable the connection at this time. The connection
may be using one or more protocols that do not support Plug-and-Play, or it
may have been initiated by another user or the system account."

I have never had this problem in the past. Anyone have any idea what is
going on and how to fix this?

Thank you for your help ...

Adrian

Adrian,

I've seen this error before and don't know a solution, only a
workaround. Disable the device in Device Manager.

Which protocols does the device use?

Hi

In general I do not think it is a Good idea to disable the Network this way,
because as the message said. "The connection may be using one or more
protocols that do not support Plug-and-Play, or it may have been initiated
by another user or the system account."

I do not know what the reason that wanted to disable the Network is, may be
that for your purpose it is the only way to go.

However I usually use this method or a variation of it:

Jack,

releasing the IP address is a good idea when you want to block
all IP connections.

On the typical small network that would block all internal
network connections as well though. The web site mentions this
in connection with using a different transport protocol for the
LAN. This is a method I don't like much, unless there is an
overriding reason for it.

But apart from that I'm wondering whether the problem is similar
to what I saw, where the user could not disable and could not
even remove a connection entirely, because he always got the
same error message mentioned in the original message here in
this thread, "The connection may be using one or more protocols
that do not support Plug-and-Play, or it may have been initiated
by another user or the system account." I still have no solution
for that. May not be relevant here though.

Let's see what Adrian (the original poster) says.
