If your disk is recognized in SATA1 but not in SATA2 mode then
the motherboard SATA controller does not support SATA2.
(or a BIOS setting prevents this, never seen tho).
See motherboard specifications. If SATA2 is supported the manufacturer will
definately say so.
You won't notice any performance loss tho, as only disk cache hits transfer
at full speed
(8MB / 16MB). For sustained transfer and seeks the disk mechanics are the
limiting factor.

(330MB/s).
