Whenever I try the manual update on the Microsoft spyware I get a message
stating that an internet connection can't be detected. I know I have one and
I know it is working. I have windows xp home edition. My connection is a dsl
connection. I have the connection enabled.
Thanks in advance for any help

Hello jimb11,

try this:

go to a command prompt and type:
netsh winsock reset
and hit enter.
Then reboot.

Tom, what do you mean "go to a command prompt?" Do you mean
start/run/...(type netsh etc.)? Also, my manual update works fine when I
use my old earthlink dialup, but fails using my new DSL connection with
Qwest. What does that tell you? regards, scott123

Go to Start | Run and type
cmd
and press <Enter>
netsh winsock reset
and hit enter.
Then reboot.

To open command prompt, click Start, point to All Programs, point to
Accessories, and then click Command Prompt. I don't think this will fix your
problem however, since your case is slightly different from the OP, give it a
try though.

Bill Sanderson suggests this fix for high-speed access:

start
all programs
accessories
communications
new connection wizard
next
connect to the internet
next
set up my connection manually
next
connect using a broadband connection that is always on
Finish

I switched over from dial-up as you did to high-speed always on, but I'd like to
have the option of going either route, as I think you might. But, I'd still
like to know how to configure for a choice of either dial-up or high-speed, if
the cable goes out. Do I have to use this wizard each time to switch connection
methods or is there something more straight-forward that I missed?

Okay. I tried the command prompt w/ netsh winsock reset; no dice. Then I
tried B. Sanderson's 'new connection wizard' method via Dave M., and now
neither work. Oh well. Thank you anyway. regards, Scott123.

Oh brother, I know better than to try to answer communications questions...
Bill also said this in another posting...

.....Never dial a connection should be marked
none of the dialups listed should be marked as default

Click Lan settings. If you still have trouble, consider checking
"automatically detect settings"

The immediately above reference was not fully quoted. Sorry, I'm going to try
again (from Bill S.):

Start, all programs, accessories, communications, New Connection wizard:
next
connect to the Internet
set up my connection manually
(probably) the final choice--connect to a broadband connection that is
always on. This should be correct even if credentials are required--if
those credentials are stored in a router which is always on.)
Then go to the Connections tab of Internet Properties (in IE, Tools,
Internet Properties)
Never dial a connection should be marked
none of the dialups listed should be marked as default

Click Lan settings. If you still have trouble, consider checking
"automatically detect settings"
