Hello,

I'm trying to delete a temp file from a WinProxy cache
folder on a Win2000 server. I am logged in as
administrator but can not delete this one file. All other
files can be deleted from that folder. I have tried
booting in safe-mode but still no luck getting rid of it.
When I try to delete it, I just get a "beep". When I try
to right-click it I get a "properties not available"
message.

Normally I would ignore it but it halts my daily tape
backup. Not Good!!!

Is there a command line command I can use? I tried the
attrib command but it doesn't even see the file.

The orig. install CD is missing, a fire a couple of years
ago took care of that. I was going to try booting into
the repair console to see if I could get rid of it that
way. I'm not sure if this would even help but I wanted to
try. If I don't have the same CD used for installation
and I try booting into the repair console, will that
corrupt Windows?

Part of the file name is as follows:
WPC-6dcf - ad.doubleclick.net-adj-abt.health-heal

Any suggestions would be a big help!

Thanks in advance!
Carl

You should really have a backup solution that can be configured so that it
doesn't quit when it encounters a file that can't be read. Possibly your
backup solution will do this, but you just haven't configured it correctly?

You may be able to access that file by using the short 8.3 file name, e.g.
DIR /X to find out what the 8.3 file name is. You might first have to use
the 8.3 file name to change the permissions on the file or confirm that it
is not a virus and/or is not currently running on your computer. This
article may have some further information on techniques to do some of this:

Thanks for the information! I will try using the 8.3
method to access/change the file.

I'm using ArcServe running from a Novell server to also
backup the Windows2000 server. The 2000 server is
running a "client" that's an all or nothing backup. This
wasn't my choice but I have to live with it until next
year when they will have the $$$ to purchase another tape
backup solution. This has always been a pain to work
with. (Both Novell and ArcServe)

Thanks again!
