can't delete message from Outbox

I have a message in my outbox (a read receipt for an unknown address) which I
can't seem to delete. It doesn't send, it just sits there and I am worried
that it might be causing problems with other messages which I am sending.

Messages may be stuck in the Outbox when you use Windows Mail on a computer
that is running Windows Vista

It also works on other folders.
