Ken Burgess

I have 2 file that came from the temp internet file
folders,

one is an msie file that shows no properties and has a
maxed out char limit on the file name.

It does not allow any changes to its name, and ignores all
attempts to delete it.

The other only gives the message that the filename is
either too long or invalid, and does nothing.

What utility is out there that will either force delete
these files, or allow me to delete the filesystem pointers
to take them off the disk.

I have tried all conventional methods, and full scandisk
does not work, and resetting permissions does nothing.

You should search the group before posting. There are tons of replies to
this, it implies using the command prompt and listing/deleting files via
short names, using DIR /X command.

Hi, Ken.

The Temporary Internet Files are not "normal" Windows files and can't be
managed in the usual ways. Windows provides special tools to deal with
them.

Start Internet Explorer and click Tools | Internet Options... In the middle
of the first (General) tab, there is a Delete Files... button, plus other
buttons to deal with these files. One way is to click Settings... and move
TIF to a different location. Then exit IE and restart it to let it move the
cache. Then exit IE again and delete the entire original TIF folder - which
is no longer "special" at this point. Restart IE once more and move the TIF
back to the original location or some other place, if you like.

IE insists on having a TIF, so if you manage to delete both the old and new
sets of TIFs, the next time you start IE, it will create a new set.

One final tweak, especially if you have broadband, is to go to the Advanced
tab of Internet Options, scroll down to Security, and check the box to Empty
TIF when you exit IE. With broadband, IE often can reload a page about as
quickly as it can retrieve it from the cache.
